Corrective surgery for vision defects may be of two kinds: there are operations carried out on the corneal surface using excimer laser, ultraviolet light, microwave, and CK radio wave therapy, and those that involve inserting or replacing an intraocular lens.

Clinical ophthalmology is a special branch of ophthalmology which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases and which supports the eye-surgery side of SERI’s activities, where the focus is on resolving vision defects of all kinds. The amount of research and specialisation in each of these two branches is the same, which means that the Switzerland Eye Research Institute may be referred to not only for eye problems caused by visual defects (such as, for example, myopia, hypermetropia, astigmatism, or presbyopia) but also for eye diseases, which nonetheless result in impaired vision. Such is the case of glaucoma, senile macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. In addition to what is known as medical retina, our centre also offers paediatric ophthalmology screening for the early detection of vision defects and diseases in children, and monitoring of infant vision development.
